In a February 2022 i-D magazine cover story, Spanish singer Rosalía reveals that she has worked on music with Frank Ocean at a New York City recording studio. The Catalan singer also credited Ocean with inspiring her recent single, “Saoko,” on her upcoming album, Motomami, saying:
There was one time that he said a line, and I never forgot it. And then weeks or even a month after, I wrote the album’s opening track, “Saoko,” and I remembered that line. And I said, Frank me dice que abra el mundo como una nuez (“Frank tells me to open the world like a nut”). What’s beautiful is that it can mean whatever you need it to mean. And for me, it makes sense. The song is all about transformation.
Previously, in a 2020 Billboard interview, Rosalía was asked what a collaborative track with Ocean might sound like, and she replied:
[A collab] would sound like fire. Really, that’s it. That’s how it would sound, I think. Frank, let’s do it; let’s do it!
Earlier, in October 2019, Ocean invited Rosalía to his PrEP+ club night series, where she made an appearance during night two.
