Frank Ocean in talks to direct first feature film
Frank Ocean is looking to direct his first feature film, according to the online outlet Discussing Film. Sources say that Ocean is in negotiations with indie distributors A24* and 2AM* to bring the project to fruition. The movie’s plot and title are currently unknown, although the project is being referred to internally as Philly.
Ocean is a notable movie buff who’s woven many film references into his music throughout his career. Examples include his eponymous 2012 track “Forrest Gump,” quotes from the 1999 film Fight Club in his 2016 video “Nikes,” and a Stanley Kubrick shoutout in his 2017 single “Provider.” He also listed 100 favorite movies in his 2016 magazine Boys Don’t Cry, ranging from the 2006 drama ATL to the 1964 satire Dr. Strangelove.
The recording artist first forayed into filmmaking in 2016 with the visual album Endless, a 46-minute video he wrote and directed. However, directing his first full-length feature film presents a whole new level of complexity and intrigue.
*Update 2025-01-30:
Although initial reports reference involvement from A24 or 2AM, the film appears to be an independent production.
