Snapchat adds two Frank Ocean filters in anticipation of his third album’s release

The social media app Snapchat has rolled out two tongue-in-cheek Frank Ocean photo filters in anticipation of his third album’s release.

The first filter shows a screenshot of a MacOS TextEdit document that reads, “Dear Frank Ocean.” It parodies Ocean’s use of TextEdit screenshots on his Tumblr blog posts—most notably, his 2012 “coming out” letter appeared in this format, as did the lyric booklet included with his 2012 Channel Orange CD release. Clearly, someone working for Team Snapchat is a fan.

The second filter features a skeleton with the caption, “Waiting for Frank Ocean’s new music like.” The text is displayed in Orator and Cooper Black—the same fonts used on the cover of Channel Orange.

Snapchat added the two teasers after a mysterious livestream resurfaced on Ocean’s website, boysdontcry.co. The stream first appeared on August 1 as a looping, black-and-white video of an empty warehouse, before going offline. It returned on August 5 with footage of Ocean working on the shop floor, building something out of wood.

Ocean first teased his impending project in April 2015, posting a photo of himself holding “two versions” of a magazine, which he captioned on Tumblr: “#Issue1 #Album3 #July2015 #BoysDontCry.” However, the initial July 2015 release date came and went with no word from Ocean. One year later, on July 2, he updated his website with an image of a Boys Don’t Cry library card featuring a series of crossed-out return dates, referencing the album and zine’s delays. The skeleton filter on Snapchat plays on fans’ four-year wait for Ocean’s follow-up to Channel Orange.
