Frank Ocean releases “Provider” lyric video featuring Tom Sachs
Frank Ocean has released a lyric video on blonded.co for his new single “Provider,” in conjunction with the track’s premiere on episode 007 of Blonded Radio. The video stars visual artist Tom Sachs, who is seen entering his New York City studio and assembling a custom boombox, which he labels “Model 60.” After inserting a cassette and pressing play, lines of karaoke-style lyrics flash across the bottom of the screen as a Hello Kitty head bounces over the words in time with the song.
In Endless, Tom Sachs’ boombox “Toyan’s Arsenal” serves as a prop, visible in the back-right corner (Apple Music, 2016).
Since 1999, Sachs has built at least sixty boomboxes for his art exhibitions. Notably, his 2002 sound system “Toyan’s Arsenal” appears in Ocean’s 2016 visual album Endless, where Ocean turns on the 12-by-8-foot boombox to start the album. Sachs is also featured in Ocean’s 2016 magazine, Boys Don’t Cry, where he published a print edition of his 2011 film Color.
More recently, Sachs designed the stage elements for Ocean’s Blonded Tour, which wrapped up on August 13. Ocean also made a cameo in his film The Hero’s Journey, released on June 8, 2017.
Update 2017-11-24: The lyric video is now available on Blonded’s YouTube channel.
